Astrid #loves-her-hoomans

THINKS SHE'S A LAP DOG

DOB 4/12/23 weight ~40 #

Hey there, everyone! I'm Astrid, a gorgeous, fun-loving, friendly, outgoing, energetic Siberian Husky/White German Shepherd mix gal with striking icy-blue eyes and an always-happy, exuberant spirit. I absolutely love my hoomans and want to be with them all the time. Foster Mom hasn’t told me that I’m NOT a toy dog, so I like to jump up in her lap for a good snuggle.

We huskies are pack-oriented dogs, so I get along superbly with other dogs whom I meet on walks. I know that my harness means that I’m going for a walk or to the dog park. Yipee! I’m leash-trained, although if I get nervous, I circle behind Foster Mom. I live with cats, and I'm fairly good with them. I'm not left alone with them yet, but the cats pretty much keep me in my lane.

We huskies were bred to be compact sled dogs of significant endurance to pull light loads over frozen expanses. When we become house pets, we need an outlet for our considerable energy. So it's best that I get vigorous daily exercise at the dog park or in the back yard with a secure fence so I can run, run, run to my heart’s content. If it’s not too hot, I love being outdoors where I can splash in the wading pool.

I’m not a backyard dog unless Foster Mom is there to play interactively with me. When she throws my favorite toy, I always bring it back for more fetching. I’m ready to frolic all the time, and after a good play session, I’ll settle down and lay at Foster Mom’s feet or on the bed with her if she’s tired too.

I’m a smart, eager-to-please girl who knows my name as well as voice commands like sit, down, no, and come here. I’m already trained to sit for my food to be served, but don’t try to touch my food after you’ve given it to me! Although I’m house-trained, I don’t like to be crated because I get restless and won’t settle down even for short periods while Foster Mom is away. So she leaves me in a room of my own, and I’m happy as a lark. Other things I don’t like are thunder and lightning storms, large trucks, and small children.

I was found as a stray on Foster Mom's brother's street. Now I'm all ready for my second and forever home. If you're looking for a medium-sized dog who really, really enjoys family life, I'm your girl! Come meet me today and see my beautiful blue eyes for yourself.

Buster #bundle-of-love

You are here:
LOVES BELLY RUBS AND GIVES KISSES

Est. DOB 10/8/18, Weight ~ 65 lbs

I’m Buster, a sweet, happy, eager-to-please, playful Boxer/Black Mouth Cur mix fella who loves “marathon” belly rubs and snuggling for hours with my human dad on the sofa or the bed. When he sits on the floor with me, I love to lie across his lap and give kisses.

I’m very loyal and doting with my human dad, with whom I’ve bonded tremendously, and I follow him everywhere. I’m respectful and trustworthy with children outside the coffee shop and on walks. A bonus is that I have a very soft mouth when I take treats and toys.

Speaking of walks, I love them! But, True Confessions – I’m working on my leash manners so I don’t get overly stimulated by cats, squirrels, or certain other dogs. I really enjoy the company of most other dogs, whether playing or lounging around together.  Moderate exercise not only stimulates me physically but mentally too.

I’ve been through obedience training and I “sit,” “down,” and “place” on command (for the most part). The trainer says that I’m a quick learner because of my treat-motivation. I’ve had a rotating cast of dog walkers, and they all applaud how people-friendly I am. With proper introductions, I meet new people and strangers easily – with the exception of people who ring that annoying doorbell.

I’ve come a long way from when I was rescued at BARC, Houston’s City shelter. You know, there are advantages to adopting an adult dog like me who’s past the stage of puppy-craziness. I’m crate-trained and know how to use the doggy door. I’m not a digger and I don’t destroy anything that isn’t a toy -- other than a couple of pillows. I’ve been a loving adopted canine brother for many months but now my canine brother's anxiety has gotten worse, to the point where it is hard for us to be together therefore it’s better that I find a new home since he was here first.  So, I’m available for adoption again!

If you’re looking for a big, gentle boy who’s a bundle of love, I fit the bill!! And I’m flexible – I can live in an apartment as long as I get adequate exercise or a home with a backyard for chasing the tennis ball.  I’d love to be the star of the show and get all of your love, i.e., not have to share you with another dog in the home, but I’d still like going to Day Care, the dog park, and play dates with my canine friends. Arrange to meet me, and remember, I’ve never met a stranger!

Charlie #embraces-life-with-joy

NEVER MET A STRANGER

Appr. DOB 7/19/175, Weight 43 lb.

Meet Charlie, a sweet senior dog with a heart full of love and a beautiful chocolate brown coat. Charlie may be in his golden years, but he still embraces life with a wagging tail and a joyful spirit. Despite coming from a difficult hoarding situation, Charlie's resilience shines through in his gentle and loving nature. He’s always up for a quick walk, a cozy nap, or just soaking up the sunshine in the yard. Charlie enjoys hiding in the bushes and finding treasures there.

We believe Charlie was crated most of his life and goes into his crate willingly. But he has missed out on many things. He was never taught commands and is really not doing well with trying to learn them now. Charlie becomes very excited about being in the house and loves to explore. Charlie checked out okay at the vet health-wise. He is heart-worm negative and on monthly preventative.

This old soul is looking for a quiet, loving home where he can enjoy his retirement surrounded by kindness and care. If you're searching for a loyal companion with a heart as big as his personality, Charlie is ready to fill your home with warmth and happiness.

Kodi #stumpy-tailed

You are here:
GREAT FAMILY DOG

DOB 11/1/18, weight 65 pounds

Hey there, everyone! I’m Kodi, a sweet, loving, and playful red Australian Stumpy-Tail Cattle Dog mix. (This is an AKC breed that is NOT an Australian Cattle Dog with a docked tail.) We are a naturally bob-tailed breed that stands square with plenty of leg-length under our bodies.

My hooman mom describes me as “a great family dog” because I get along great with adults, kids, cats, and other dogs. You name it, I’m easy to please. Like my brother Gordo, I can’t get enough of playing fetch, and I’m an expert at focusing on the ball. I should be an Astros outfielder! After a rousing game of fetch, I enjoy being a couch potato with Gordo. I pride myself on my dedication to guarding my foster home.

When my owner died, a relative gave me to my new mom. She loves me, and I do fit in great here, but unfortunately she is under the threat of eviction and wisely is trying to find me the perfect forever home that I deserve.

Do you have room in your heart and hearth for a big, burly, and handsome red man who will love you 200%? Then arrange to meet me, and let’s begin writing a new chapter in our lives together! Incidentally there are advantages to adopting an adult dog like me. I have perfect house habits and won’t chew or destroy your stuff.

Lucas #ready-to-snuggle

You are here:
BILINGUAL POOCH

Estimated DOB 10/29/19, weight 55 pounds

Hello!  My name is Lucas, and I was abandoned at a vet clinic where I was tied to the front door.  Fortunately, the clinic found a client who agreed to take me in and foster me. The vet helped get me hooked up with an adoption program, so here I am, a HOPE dog now!

I love playing with balls and squeaky toys, going running with my foster mom’s neighbor, and sunning in the backyard in nice weather. I like to play with other dogs, but I like to wrestle. It looks/sounds rough, so I may be better as the only-pet child.

I'm a smart boy who already knows "sit." I'm crate trained, bilingual, and ready to snuggle with you! Arrange to meet me today!

Poppy #outgoing-and-friendly

You are here:
GIVES MUSHY PUPPY KISSES

Est. DOB 7/1/23, weight 26 lbs.

Hi! I'm Poppy, an affectionate, playful, and energetic Australian Cattle Dog/German Pinscher mix gal who’s also very sweet and gives lots of kisses. I look like a compact, black-with-red-accents shepherd who’s probably close to full grown. I’m an outgoing, sociable pooch whom many people wanted to pet recently when I rode around in the shopping cart at Home Depot. Did I mention I LOVE getting petted -- especially on my belly?

Nothing makes me happier than interactively playing with my pawrents with double-tug rope-toys as well as marathon games of Frisbee. I’m a happy, wiggly gal who loves zooming around the yard. I like to chew on things -- mostly bones and my squeaky toys. My foster family works out in their garage, and I haven't quite gotten the hang of quietly sitting still while they work, but I’m learning because I just enjoy spending time with them.

When I was a young puppy, I was adopted from a local shelter, but later my family abandoned me in my future-foster family's neighborhood. I guess you know that, because of inflation, lots of owners can’t afford their pets and are either dumping them or leaving them behind when they move out. Thank heavens my foster pawrents brought me inside and promised to find me a wonderful forever home. I enjoy playing with their older female dog, but the senior cat hasn’t yet warmed up to my friendly overtures.

So now I’m ready for a permanent home this time around. I would really like to find a family who can love me for just who I am! Do you think it could be you? Arrange to meet me, and I just may cover your face with mushy puppy kisses.

Rex #mellow-fellow

You are here:
DESPERATELY WANTS TO BE A LAP DOG

Estimated DOB 8/23/23, weight 45 pounds

Hey there, everyone! I’m Rex, and I’m an amiable, mellow, undemanding, and even-tempered Redbone Coonhound mix who absolutely adores all members of my foster family – pawrents, three young children, small dog, and the cat. I’m a sweet, gentle, friendly, and affectionate hound who thinks he’s a lap dog. I particularly love cuddling with the kids on the sofa while I gnaw on my favorite chew toy. My dreamy brown eyes give me the “pleading” expression that characterizes most Redbones.

I’m barely more than a pup, so I’m energetic as well as playful and probably have some room to grow until I weigh up to 55 pounds. I’m a streamlined athlete who relishes vigorous outdoor exercise like playing fetch and chasing the resident dog when we both get the zoomies. I’m a delight to watch as I move with the Redbone's proud, determined gait.

I’m smart and therefore a quick learner. Redbones are sensitive to heavy-handed treatment, but I’ve thrived under the patient training of my foster pawrents. I quickly learned to sit upon command, and I’m working on being fully crate- and leash-trained. I enjoy my walking excursions because I get to meet other friendly dogs.

Redbones are an American original who were bred by settlers to track wily nocturnal game in all kinds of punishing terrain; consequently, we’re fast and surefooted. We may be mellow and kindly at home, but we transform to tigers on the scent-hunting trail. Pop culture may have stereotyped us as lazy hounds who snooze on the porch, but actually hunting and swimming between long rest periods is a pretty accurate rhythm of a Redbone’s life.

My foster family rescued me from the streets shortly after Hurricane Beryl. With their abundant love and patience, I’ve truly blossomed while I've been in their care. My always-cheerful disposition has captivated their hearts, as it will yours. Arrange to meet me today! I’ve never met a hooman whom I didn’t adore, and I’m anxious to add you to my collection of friends.

Sammy #cheery-lap-dog

BOOSTS YOUR MOOD, MAKES YOU SMILE

Est. DOB 1/7/15, WEIGHT 12.7 lbs.

Arf! Arf, everyone! I’m Sammy, a sweet, friendly, quiet, and affectionate white Maltipoo (Maltese/Mini Poodle mix) fella who is, in my humble opinion, the world’s greatest little dog. I think my foster mom agrees because she loves it that I curl up and settle in her lap whenever I can. There are two resident dogs and a cat in my foster home, but I’m much rather interact with beloved Foster Mom than play with them.

I have a comical idiosyncrasy: I like to burrow under anything I can move and get under. You name it – bedcovers, blankets, pillows, throws. Foster Mom thinks it’s adorable that a cute little thing such as I am likes to excavate my own little lair like a mole.

Let me tell you a little about Maltipoos. We’re gentle, social dogs who love people. Our happy, cheerful dispositions are guaranteed to boost your mood and make you smile. We can even be good therapy dogs because of the comfort we provide. And I’m no exception to this profile!

I really looked like a mess when my foster mom first rescued me! Oh my goodness – I weighed only 10 pounds! You could see every bone on my vertebrae, plus I had no hair on my back. My eyes were practically glued shut with “goop” from an infection; I also had an ear infection; and my mouth was a mess from neglected preventative dentistry.

Thank heavens Foster Mom and the vet have transformed me into a new man! With a steady diet of nutritious food, I’ve gained 2.5 pounds, I’m filling out nicely, and my fur is growing back! I’m eating a soft diet that’s appropriate after all of the diseased teeth (that hadn’t already fallen out) have been pulled. I look and feel so much better! And the silver lining about having no teeth is that I don't need any future dental cleanings!

Medications have cleared up my original eye and ear infections. The vet also diagnosed that I have a condition called “dry eye,” which means that I don’t produce tears like I should. So Foster Mom puts drops in my eyes twice a day and cleans out any “goop” once to twice a day Thanks to the hair around my eyes being clipped, Foster Mom can clean out my eyes easier. I have cataracts in both eyes so I have very limited visibility and bump into things, but get around once I've learned my way! I generally move slow so I don’t hurt myself !

Even though I sleep a good portion of the day, I am quite aware of sounds and scents. I will sound the alarm at unfamiliar noises. I will track Foster Mom down if she has moved from where I left her using my superior olfactory senses.

My ideal home would be one that has a doggie door to a small fenced back yard and someone to keep me company.  I’m so grateful for all the love and attention that I’m getting! In return, I snuggle and cuddle like you wouldn’t believe! I’ve learned how to use the doggie door, and I’m now crate-trained.

If you’re looking for a cozy lap dog and can look past my limitations, I’d really like to be your dog! Half of my life is still ahead of me, so let’s spend it together! My heart has so much love to give, all that’s missing is YOU!

Willie #loves-his-hoomans

You are here:
ALL-AROUND GREAT COMPANION

DOB 8/28/23, weight 39 lb.

Hey there, everyone! I’m Willie, a sweet, friendly, and affectionate Australian Cattle Dog/Black Lab mix who loves spending quality time close by my hoomans. In my quiet way, I want to be wherever Foster Mom is. I’m sociable with people who want to engage, but I don't annoy or demand hooman attention.

I’m a handsome dude who’s as fantastic on the inside as I look on the outside! I’m playful when it’s playtime, but I settle down and happily chill out at Foster Mom’s feet while she reads. I quietly sleep at the end of her bed and snuggle next to her thigh as we binge together on Animal Planet and Netflix. I walk well on a leash and really enjoy long walks in the neighborhood so I can sniff and explore new things. I’m smart and eager to please, so I’m easily trained and catch on quickly.

I’ve got the compact build and head of an ACD, but my short, smooth black coat with white locket and vest indicate that Lab blood is probably also coursing through my veins. Since ACD’s are herding dogs, we’re in our groove when we’re given a job to do that engages us both mentally and physically. With our boundless energy and keen intelligence, we excel at dog sports like agility and make excellent running partners. To keep us out of mischief, our hoomans should avoid allowing us to get bored!

A Good Samaritan found me as a stray who was probably dumped on the side of the busy Grand Parkway in front of the PetSmart in Richmond. She posted on FaceBook that she had found me, but no one responded. After bouncing around to several homes for my first few days post-rescue, I was ecstatic when my future foster mom stepped up to the plate and agreed to foster me. I haven't been tested around kids, but I'm probably young and gentle enough to live happily in a home with small children. I'm the only dog in my foster home, but I'm friendly when I meet other dogs on my walks (and tug on my leash when I see a cat that I want to chase).

Now I’m ready to find my forever home. If you’re looking for a true-blue loyal buddy who’s an all-around great companion dog, I’m your man! Arrange to meet me today! My heart has so much love to give – all I need is YOU!

Hi my name is Zeus! With my ice-blue eyes, everyone says I'm so handsome.
